Hasthampatti (spelled “Hasthampatty” in Salem City Municipal Corporation documents) is Zone 2 of the SCMC (Salem City Municipal Corporation), one of four administrative zones in the city. It is in the northeast part of Salem, centred on Yercaud Main Road and Sarada College Road.
The pin code is 636007, under the Salem North postal head office. The area spans the Salem West and Salem North assembly constituencies, reflecting how it bridges the older western city core and the newer northern growth belt.
The Hasthampatti junction, where Yercaud Main Road meets Sarada College Road and the internal roads (Gandhi Road, Ramakrishna Road, Cherry Road), is the practical centre of the locality. The Salem Corporation Zone 2 ward office sits on Sarada College Road.

What the neighbourhood feels like
Yercaud Main Road is not quiet. It carries a sustained daily load: residents heading to the city, through-traffic toward Yercaud, and at peak hours the kind of jams that a main junction in inner Salem reliably produces. Parking near the junction is tight. Residents who live on or near the main road know this.
The residential streets that run off Yercaud Main Road and Sarada College Road are a different experience. Layouts and independent houses set back from the arterial roads have the quieter, more settled feel of inner Salem: less through-traffic, more walking distance to local shops, the kind of neighbourhood rhythm the main road itself does not offer.
The social character of the area is broadly middle-class and practical. Hasthampatti does not carry the slightly premium residential reputation of Fairlands, and it is not a gated-community zone. It is a practical inner-city neighbourhood: local markets at walking distance (cited by residents more than almost anything else), auto-rickshaws easy to flag down, banks in the area, and an Apollo Pharmacy on Ramakrishna Road.
A two-tier flyover runs through this corridor. The Puratchi Thalaivi Jayalalithaa Two-Tier Flyover (7.87 km, inaugurated June 2020) has its lower tier (2.86 km) running from the AVR Roundabout to Yercaud Road through the Five Roads junction, directly along the Hasthampatti stretch. It has reduced, though not eliminated, peak-hour congestion at the junction.
Healthcare: the clearest practical advantage
Healthcare is the clearest practical advantage Hasthampatti has over most of inner Salem. The concentration of hospitals within or immediately next to the locality is unusual anywhere in the city.
Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital (GMKMCH). On Fort Main Road in Shevapet, immediately adjacent to Hasthampatti, GMKMCH has approximately 2,000 beds. Super-specialty programmes cover cardiology, neurology, nephrology (kidney care), neurosurgery, gastroenterology (digestive system), and paediatric surgery. The hospital records over 1,000 deliveries every month and handles a large outpatient and inpatient volume from Salem and surrounding districts. Shanmuga Hospital and Salem Cancer Institute. At 24, Sarada College Road in Hasthampatti, Shanmuga Hospital was established in 1981 and holds NABH accreditation (the national quality standard for hospitals) and NABL accreditation for its diagnostic laboratory. The Salem Cancer Institute, opened in 1996 as part of the same complex, was the first cancer care facility for eight surrounding districts, covering surgical, medical, and radiation oncology. Salem Gopi Hospital. At 23-B, Ramakrishna Road. Established in 1981, 75 beds, 10-bed ICU. The first multispecialty hospital in Salem to receive ISO 9001 certification (an internationally recognised quality management standard). Focus on nephrology and kidney care, plus dialysis, urology, cardiology, and general medicine.
J.S. ENT Hospital. At 5, Ramakrishna Road. Established in 1960 by Dr. J. Sugavanam, described as Salem’s first UK-qualified ENT surgeon. Current purpose-built facility from 1997. Ear microsurgery, endoscopic sinus procedures, and head and neck oncology.
Ammani Multi-Specialty Hospital. At 130, Gandhi Road, opened 2015. General medicine, emergency, and oncology supportive care.
Ramakrishna Road, Gandhi Road, and Sarada College Road together form a medical belt within the locality. Hospitals, the Apollo Pharmacy branch on Ramakrishna Road, and diagnostic labs are all within a short walk of the Hasthampatti junction.
Schools and colleges
The educational presence in Hasthampatti is a mix of long-established schools and two colleges that give the area a visible institutional character.
Schools: CSI Hobart Primary School has been in Hasthampatti since 1908, one of the older school institutions in Salem city. CSI Hobart Girls Higher Secondary School is in the same tradition. Cluny Matriculation Higher Secondary School, run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, offers English-medium education for girls up to Class 12. L.E.F. Eden Garden Matriculation School, established in 1979 by the Laymen’s Evangelical Fellowship, is co-educational, English medium, and goes up to Class 10. Between them, these schools serve the core school-age population across state board and matriculation streams.
Colleges: Sri Sarada College for Women, established in 1961 and affiliated to Periyar University with autonomous status, stands on Sarada College Road. The road takes its name from the college. It runs 12 undergraduate programmes, 7 postgraduate programmes, and doctoral research, and is ranked 81st among all colleges in India in the NIRF 2025 ranking (the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework, the government’s college quality index).
CSI Polytechnic College, on Yercaud Main Road at No. 19, offers 10 diploma programmes including Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Engineering, and Robotics. Established in 1984 under the Church of South India.
The foot traffic from Sri Sarada College and the CSI Teacher Training Institute for Women keeps the side-street shops busy through the day. It gives the neighbourhood more daytime life than you would find in a purely residential area.
Getting around from Hasthampatti
For short hops within Salem, share autos are the most practical choice from Hasthampatti. The bus stop on Yercaud Main Road is on city bus routes, and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses from the Old Bus Stand to Yercaud run through this corridor. Ola and Uber operate in Salem city.
For longer journeys, the Old Bus Stand (2 km, about 8 minutes by share auto) is the practical hub for city and regional buses. Salem Junction (5 km, around 15 minutes by auto or cab) connects to the rail network: Vande Bharat Express to Chennai in about 3 hours 45 minutes and to Bengaluru in under 4 hours by the faster services.
The Yercaud route begins on Hasthampatti’s doorstep. The road from the Old Bus Stand to Yercaud Adivaram (where the ghat road starts) passes through Hasthampatti and covers about 7 km before the climb begins. Salem Airport is on the opposite side of the city from Hasthampatti, on the Bengaluru highway. The airport is about 19 km from Salem’s city centre; from Hasthampatti specifically it is further. For regular air travel, a cab is the practical option.

The characteristic residents mention most is the walkable market. Local produce, grocery, and general shops are spread through the side lanes, not concentrated in a single market you need to drive to. The neighbourhood has that day-to-day self-sufficiency that newer layouts further from the city centre often do not.
Banking is covered: Indian Overseas Bank has a branch at the District Court Compound on Yercaud Main Road with a 24-hour ATM, and HDFC Bank ATMs are within the locality. Apollo Pharmacy is on Ramakrishna Road. Diagnostic labs (including Gem Clinical Laboratory on Cherry Road) handle routine tests without a trip elsewhere.
Who Hasthampatti suits
Hasthampatti works well for families where healthcare access is a real priority. GMKMCH in adjacent Shevapet and four hospitals within the locality itself is not a combination most Salem neighbourhoods can match. It suits families who value everyday convenience over address prestige: the walkable markets, the steady daytime life from the colleges, and the short auto ride to anywhere in the locality make daily living more practical than in newer layouts further out on the Attur or Omalur roads.
Buyers looking at Fairlands who find prices there out of reach often turn to Hasthampatti. The two areas are about a kilometre apart along Sarada College Road, and some of the same infrastructure is shared: Shanmuga Hospital is on Sarada College Road in Hasthampatti, technically on the same corridor.
The trade-off to weigh: Yercaud Main Road and Sarada College Road carry significant traffic at peak hours. Families considering a flat on or near these roads should factor that in. Inner residential streets and layouts are quieter. Hasthampatti is not Salem’s most premium address, and property prices reflect that positioning, which can work in a buyer’s favour.
